Otoplasty by Craniofacial Surgeon

Otoplasty by Craniofacial Surgeon @ GLOJAS

Otoplasty is a procedure for surgical reshaping of the pinna or outer ear. The aim may be to correct a deformity or to improve appearance. Reconstructive surgery involves building up the outer ear after an accident or because of a congenital deformity. Pinning back the ears so that they look better. Prominent ears can be bothersome for children who may be facing much embarrassment. Ears can be considered prominent if they stand out more than 2 centimetres from the side of the head. An Otoplasty procedure is more common during childhood but can be performed at any age.

Many face humiliation of all sorts when their ears appear prominently from the sides of their head, children may think of it as “Mickey Mouse Ears.” Often being subjected to laughter and bullying. Adults find it a major issue with their image and it can affect self-esteem. Every individual faced with this issue reacts differently but in a nutshell, the experience is far from a pleasant one.

We at Glojas are proud to have the best and permanent solution to this issue, an Otoplasty is done by our In-House Plastic Surgeon. How is rhinoplasty different from septoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a surgery to change the shape of the nose. Because both breathing and the nose’s shape are interrelated, a rhinoplasty may sometimes be performed not only to change the way the nose looks but also to improve breathing through the nose.

Septoplasty is a surgery to improve breathing by straightening the wall inside the nose that divides the nasal passages into a right and a left side (nasal septum). When the septum is crooked, it can make it harder to breathe through the nose. A septoplasty is often combined with a rhinoplasty.

Is rhinoplasty a simple operation?

Changes made during rhinoplasty are often very small. But these changes can make a major difference in the way the nose looks and functions. Because these changes are small, so is the margin for error.

Swelling and the placement of local anaesthetic in the skin distort the nose during surgery, hiding many of the subtle changes made. Rhinoplasty also doesn’t have a standard plan or set order of steps. Doctors tailor each operation to the needs of the patient.

Will I need to stay in the hospital?

Nearly everyone who has rhinoplasty is able to safely leave the hospital the same day after surgery. In rare cases, you may stay in the hospital for one night if you’re having a hard time with nausea or have other health problems that need to be monitored. At Glojas, 100% of our patients leave immediately after the procedure and return the next day for a follow-up.

How long is the recovery period?

Plan to take a week off from work, school or other obligations. You will feel progressively better each day during the first week. One week after surgery, people usually feel like they are themselves again.

After surgery, there will be some swelling. The swelling can take many months to resolve, although most people stop noticing it after a couple of months. People are usually back to performing most activities after a week and resuming all activities after two to four weeks.

Are there risks?

All surgeries have risks. Fortunately, rhinoplasty risks are small and complications are rare. Your doctor will talk to you about the surgery’s risks and benefits in detail before the operation.

Can I see what my nose might look like after surgery?

Yes. Before your consultation, your doctor will take standardized photographs of multiple views of your face. These photos can be manipulated to give you an idea of what your nose might look like after surgery.

Is rhinoplasty painful?

Not for most people. One day after surgery, most people rate their pain between 0 and 4 out of 10.

Will you pack my nose?

No. Packing can be very uncomfortable. But you’ll likely have some soft splints in your nose. These splints have a hole in them to make it possible to breathe through them, at least for a few days. Doctors easily remove these splints at the one-week visit.

How long will I be bruised?

Minor Bruising is normal, it usually lasts two to three weeks.

What should I look for in a surgeon?

Plastic surgeons or facial plastic surgeons with Training and board / University Medical Specialist Education in one of these specialties is a good starting point. You’ll likely want a surgeon who often performs rhinoplasty.

You’ll likely want a surgeon with a good reputation among patients and other doctors. If your surgeon has published many papers in medical literature related to rhinoplasty and is invited to speak at educational conferences that is usually one sign that their peers recognize expertise in rhinoplasty.

Make sure that your surgery will be performed in an accredited surgical facility or hospital. You likely should also feel comfortable with your surgeon. Look for a surgeon who can explain to you in understandable terms what is going to happen during your surgery.

Here at Glojas, our in-house Plastic Surgeon is one of Malaysia’s leading Plastic Surgeons and Malaysia’s ONLY Craniofacial Surgeon. As a Craniofacial Surgeon it gives him the extra edge as he is a highly specialised surgeon in the reconstruction of head, ears, eyes, nose, mouth, face and neck region. About an Alarplasty

The nose is considered by plastic surgeons as the center of attraction in the face, and its shape or “type” can widely vary between a person and another due to their ethnicity or race. The nose is divided in 3 areas, which are the bridge, the nasal tip and the alar rim-base, and any change in one of those nasal areas can drastically change the whole aspect of the face.

In fact, many of them say that rhinoplasty (or the surgical procedure to change the nose’s shape) can be classified in two types, nose augmentation or nose reduction. The nose augmentation is usually performed in Asians and consists in changing the aspect of the nasal bridge when the patient has a flat nose.

What is an Alarplasty?

According to experts, an Alarplasty (commonly called trimming of the nostril/alae) is a plastic surgery that allows narrowing the width of the nose by reducing the size and projection of the nasal wings. This procedure also allows improving the patient’s facial harmony and the breathing.

The Alarplasty can be performed as an isolated procedure or as a part of a complete rhinoplasty. In both cases, the results are dramatic and the plastic surgeon always tries to make them as natural as possible.

Who can Undergo Alarplasty?

In general terms, any person who only wishes to reduce the width of his/her nasal wings can be a good candidate for an Alarplasty. Most experts say that, to determine if the nose has a “normal” width, you can draw an imaginary line from the nasal wings end to the point where the eye of each side begins. If those points match, you have a normal width in your nose.

However, it is important to know that only a qualified plastic surgeon can decide who is a good candidate for an Alarplasty because the width of the nose must be harmonious and proportional with the other facial structures. The surgeon will determine the best alar size to guarantee a proper breathing.

Finally, as it was said before, this procedure can be used as a complement of a complete rhinoplasty to create a proper facial harmony on par with world class expectations making the candidate rather attractive.

What Must I Know Before Having Alarplasty?

You must visit a plastic surgeon to determine if you are a good candidate for this procedure, the best way to perform the Alarplasty and to fill the medical history. During this consultation you must ask the doctor any question about the procedure and the recovery process.

Here at Glojas Plastic Surgery Centre, our In-House Plastic Surgeon is one of Malaysia’s leading Plastic Surgeons and is also Malaysia’s ONLY Craniofacial Surgeon with 15 years of rich experience, knowledge and talent. Dr.Mohd Ali is highly trusted and acclaimed around the world.

One must know that an Alarplasty is considered an outpatient procedure, so you will go home the same day that the procedure is performed. This procedure is done on Local Anaesthesia hence making the procedure very safe and free from complications. The Candidate will be in proper health to leave our medical practice once the procedure is done.

The recovery time after an Alarplasty is shorter than other cosmetic surgeries and you can obtain the final results after one or two months, which is the moment when swelling and bruising disappear.

Permanent & Effective Gynaecomastia Removal @ GLOJAS

For men, enlarged breasts can be stressful and embarrassing. Gynecomastia can be difficult to hide and a challenge to romantic relationships. During puberty, gynecomastia can make boys a target for teasing from peers. It can make activities such as swimming or changing in the locker room traumatic.

“You don’t have to let gynecomastia keep you away from feeling most confident. With the help of a skilled, qualified surgeon, you can restore a naturally masculine appearance to your chest. Today’s advanced techniques allow for a short surgery, quick recovery, and virtually invisible scars!” – Dr. Mohd Ali, MD (UKM), M.Surg (Plastic Surgery) USM.

Excision techniques are recommended where glandular breast tissue or excess skin must be removed to correct gynecomastia or better known as Male Boobs. Excision also is necessary if the areola will be reduced or the nipple will be repositioned to a more natural male contour. Incision patterns vary depending on the specific conditions and surgical preference.

Here at Glojas, a combination of excision and liposuction is done for a full gynaecomastia removal which bring about the best and permanent results. Do take note that most medical practices perform only a liposuction for more affordable cost for the patient but the results are never permanent. Here at Glojas we aim for permanent results hence the combination of excision and liposuction.

In most cases gynecomastia requires both an excision and liposuction. This requires insertion of a cannula, a thin hollow tube, through several small incisions. The cannula is moved back and forth in a controlled motion to loosen the excess fat, which is then removed from the body by vacuum suction.

Local Anaesthesia (LA) will be provided which means that all possible pain is managed effectively under much lower cost than a General Anaesthesia (GA).

Do take note that this procedure is strictly done by a qualified Plastic Surgeon. Here at Glojas, our surgeon is one of Malaysia’s leading Plastic Surgeons and Malaysia’s sole Craniofacial Surgeon who holds more than 15 years of experience.

It’s pertinent that those who wish to undergo plastic surgery are fully aware that patience is core because patience is the foremost quality to have during the recovery period which can get frustrating and nerve wrecking. Recover period can be anywhere between two weeks to two months and in some cases up to six months. During this period of time many would feel that their post-surgery doesn’t seem to be healing or looks too ugly. This is the standard process of all those who undergo plastics surgery

Potential side-effects are most likely to occur immediately after your operation. Because of this, it is very important to follow all of your surgeon’s post-operative instructions. You will be supplied with a comprehensive packet of post-operative instructions. Be sure to follow these instructions to ensure a healthy recovery and eliminate potential risks. Never hesitate to ask your plastic surgeon specific questions about your recovery process.

Get Your Support System, ready!

Not only will you need assistance after your surgery but you will also need a caretaker to take you to and from your procedure as you will not be able to drive. Also, you’re probably going to be out of commission for at least a week after a plastic surgery procedure. Inform your family and friends about your upcoming surgery, and make sure that you have a support system in place – people who can help you cook, clean, and do other tasks since you may be limited in the amount of activity allowed during your recovery period. The first 2-3 days after surgery will be the most difficult as you may experience uncomfortable soreness. It’s best to have someone in your home to take care of you during this time.

Be Ready To Take Time Off Of Work

You’re probably going to have to take a week or two leave for work after your procedure. This means you may have to plan your cosmetic surgery around your available vacation days.

Relax And Keep Yourself Occupied

When you’re recovering from plastic surgery, it’s important that you limit activity and relax. Let the healing process take place. If you try to rush things, recovery may take longer. Keep yourself occupied. Check a few books out from the library or download a few on your Kindle. Find a few new shows to watch on Netflix or Hulu – this time is a great chance for you to relax and take things easy for a little while.

Maintain a healthy diet, start your meal plan!

Due to limited activity, you may not be able to run to the grocery store and cook a big meal for yourself for a little while, so prep ahead of time. Remember, a nutritious, high-calorie diet helps in your recover and If you can, try to have friends and family prepare ready-to-eat meals for you, so that you can eat well without having to cook on your own.

Avoid Exercise or Over-exertion

Until you’re cleared to do so by your doctor, avoid overexerting yourself, or intense exercise. Post-plastic surgery recovery involves a lot of healing from sutures and incisions – and excessive exercise can cause damage to wounds that are still healing.

Drink Plenty of Water

Adequate hydration is essential for the post-plastic surgery care. Drinking plenty of water helps replenish the fluids lost during surgery.

Avoid Excessive Sun Exposure

Minimize your exposure to the sun. You want to avoid any sun damage to your skin or scar tissue by minimizing sun exposure, wearing sunblock, and wearing the appropriate clothing to protect against harmful UV rays.  Since you may be wearing compression garments, you also want to avoid excessive heat so you are not sweating in your garment. Too much sun can also dehydrate you, which certainly doesn’t!

After surgery, you will probably notice some swelling, bruising, and minimal scarring (depending on the surgery). Don’t let these discourage you. If you follow your plastic surgeon’s post-op instructions, you will start to see that these will dissipate – and you’ll see the full results of your plastic surgery procedure in no time. Just remember, recovery times will vary by surgery type. Everybody’s recovery process will be different.

Be patient when recovering from plastic surgery, and rely on your plastic surgeon and support network to get you through the process. You’ll be back on your feet in no time, feeling more confident and ready to reveal the new you!
