An Otoplasty

An Otoplasty @ glojas

Ear reshaping, also known as Otoplasty, refers to a range of common cosmetic surgery procedures designed to correct the size and shape of the ear and earlobe.

What causes abnormal ears?

Our genes largely dictate the shape and size of our ears. In these respects, ears can vary enormously between individuals as well as between the right and left side. In situations where the ears appear to be particularly prominent or when the shape looks out of the normal, psychological effects are often experienced.

Ear surgery can be used to treat many other ear deformities such as; reshaping cartilage ears that have an unnatural shape, reducing overly large ears and reducing large earlobes or earlobes that have been overstretched (by wearing earrings, or as a result of ‘ear stretching’, also known as gauging).

You are also able to have otoplasty to increase the size of a very small ear, or even rebuild new ears if you were born without an ear.

Is there Downtime?

It takes 7 to 14 days to heal depending on the invidual’s recovery process.

What does the surgery involve?

This minor surgery usually involves making a single incision behind the ear, exposing the cartilage. The cartilage is scored and stitched to produce the desired position and shape.

Is it painful?

There will be no pain as local anaesthesia will be administered before the surgery. Most patients only have very minor pain and discomfort during the days following the ear reshaping surgery, this can be controlled with over the counter medications such as paracetamol and anti-inflammatory tablets.

What is the cost?

It starts from USD1,000 onwards depending if it’s one ear or both and the issues faced and the desired results.

Otoplasty by Craniofacial Surgeon @ GLOJAS

Otoplasty is a procedure for surgical reshaping of the pinna or outer ear. The aim may be to correct a deformity or to improve appearance. Reconstructive surgery involves building up the outer ear after an accident or because of a congenital deformity. Pinning back the ears so that they look better. Prominent ears can be bothersome for children who may be facing much embarrassment. Ears can be considered prominent if they stand out more than 2 centimetres from the side of the head. An Otoplasty procedure is more common during childhood but can be performed at any age.

Many face humiliation of all sorts when their ears appear prominently from the sides of their head, children may think of it as “Mickey Mouse Ears.” Often being subjected to laughter and bullying. Adults find it a major issue with their image and it can affect self-esteem. Every individual faced with this issue reacts differently but in a nutshell, the experience is far from a pleasant one.

We at Glojas are proud to have the best and permanent solution to this issue, an Otoplasty is done by our In-House Plastic Surgeon. The earlobe is the lower, fleshy part of the ear that is sometimes pierced. The area consists of a delicate piece of skin that is made up of fat and skin.

We can manage:

  • Split earlobes
  • Elongated earlobes
  • Stretched earlobes
  • Reduction of earlobe size

A split earlobe is more likely to occur for those that wear heavy earrings constantly.

Elongation of the hole or complete splitting of the earlobe can occur either over time through the thin wire of an earring being pulled by the weight of an earring or through trauma such as the jewellery being yanked or snagged suddenly.

Big holes in the earlobe from big plug earrings that stretch the hole intentionally can also be repaired.

We also complete ear lobe reduction procedures to re-shape and re-size the fleshy lobe part of the ear.

Is the procedure painful?

Apart from the local anaesthetic injection, which may feel like a little prick, you should not feel any discomfort at all. You might experience a slight stinging sensation as the ear begins to numb throughout. When the treatment has finished and anaesthetic effect wears off, slight discomfort may be experienced. Usually, patients do not require the consumption of pain killers.
